I Love Lucy lips

At the risk of sounding a little too “Jerry Seinfeld” I’m going to start by asking, “Am I the only one who notices the fact that Leslie Stahl, venerable reporter with CBS News best known for her long-standing gig with 60 Minutes, doesn’t seem to know how to apply her own lipstick?
OK, in her defense, I’d have to guess that Leslie doesn’t actually apply her own make-up before going on camera for 60 Minutes. It’s not absolutely certain but she no doubt has a professional make-up artist doing that for her, albeit only with her direction.
I’m actually a fan of 60 Minutes. I, like throngs of other geezers and boomers, have been watching that TV show for decades. Along with the rest of America, I’ve grown up — or more accurately, grown old with — with the anchors of that show.
Tivo’d from last night’s broadcast, I watched it tonight.
Although it seems that the 120-year-old Don Hewitt and CBS can see that some of these folks have just been around too long and are trying to bring new blood on to the show like the little Brit hottie Lara Logan, and Katie Couric and Anderson Cooper, they still have the frail Morely Safer the gazillion-year-old Mike Wallace and that ghost at the end.
Don’t misunderstand, I’m no agist. I admire and respect the elderly and I even applaud CBS for not subscribing to what seems to be a culture that’s indifferent to experience and bent on youth, constantly handing bouquets to confused, drug-addled tweens.
And I think Leslie Stahl is a very attractive woman. It’s just her lipstick.
Every week I see her and I think, either she was just too drunk when she put her lipstick on or she needs to get new contact lenses. She tends to put lipstick on parts of her face that aren’t lips at all like she is trying to look like Angelina Jolie.
But she looks more like Lucille Ball.
I think Lucy had lips that were shaped that way and Angelina just has lips for days but when Leslie comes on camera she looks to me like somebody who just left Tony’s Steak and Seafood where she pounded three bourbon and waters and put her cigarette out in the butter.
I’m likely to take some shit for this post. My wife tells me that I shouldn’t make fun of her because she’s an older woman, that she’s too easy a target. She says that if I feel the need to make fun of someone, I should make fun of Andy Rooney.
I don’t know.
How is it OK to make fun of an old man who needs to take some hedge trimmers to his eyebrows but it’s not OK to make fun of a woman who is, older?
Finally, let me clarify. I love Leslie. She’s a talented, skillful and accomplished journalist. She’s even hottie … for her age.I just wish she would change either the color or volume of her lipstick or try iced tea next time she has lunch at Tony’s.

  1. It’s the middle of 2012 and she continues to put on lipstick outside of the dotted lines. It’s just amazing to me that she would go on camera this way. Sometimes it’s worse than others. But those times where she’s trying so hard to look like a hip slick New Yorker with hair messed a bit and lipstick going awry, it’s the equivalent of a man who does a comb-over. I guess now that I think about it, it is worse, actually. I does indeed look like you were drunk when you dressed yourself. Can someone just text her, for god’s sake.

  2. I think her lipstick situation needs an intervention but she is gorgeous. I love colour in lips but @ 43 I know I’m going to have to go more subtle @ some point. Leslie needs to see some video of herself. She needs to update her lip wear. How old is she by the way?

  3. I am glad someone finally noticed that Leslie is an airhead. I have been wondering why 60 Minutes “token” woman is allowed to go on the air with her hair like that let alone her lipstick? Her hair is always a mess and what passes for a style is in fact not. Anyway, while we are on the subject, i watched the show last night and could hardly make out the words of the old fart Morley Safer. He sounds like he has a mouth full of marbles.

Why oh why do we have to put up with these old men? It is a travesty. How about getting some people in their 50’s at least?

Bring Katie Couric on more often and some more women!

  4. **LONG WINDED COMMENT ALERT**

    Hee hee, very humorous post!

However, I would like to clarify one thing. I don’t feel Leslie, herself is an easy target. I think woman, in general, are all too often judged by how they look, more so than by their intelligence, talent, etc., (duh). Once a woman gets older, it seems to me, the perception of her worth slides downward even more, along with her youthful beauty.

Nothing could be further from the truth, as I know you know. Woman, like men, with age often become more expert in their field, more insightful, mature, more beautiful in general (albeit, mostly on the inside.)

My concern with making fun of Leslie and suggesting making fun of Andy instead, (although, he in particular has had his share of jabs, I’m sure) is because typically, older men are not chided about their looks and their aging as much as woman are. They seem to get more of a pass.

All this to clarify what I said, and to answer your last question “How is it OK to make fun of an old man…but it’s not OK to make fun of a woman who is, older?”

This long-winded comment being said, I actually think your post was quite funny and clever and eloquent, as usual! And, although I think Leslie is a lovely woman, I’m not crazy about her lipstick either!
